Bumper stickers have long been a source of fun or a way to make a political or social statement, however what you are sticking to your car may be saying a great deal more about you as a person then simply your preference to “Make Love Not War”.

There is now a direct causal link between bumper stickers placed on a driver’s vehicle, and their propensity to be engaged in a road rage incident.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) found that there were 12,000 injuries and 200 fatalities due to road rage back in 1995. By 2008, these troubling statistics had risen to 25,000 injuries and 370 fatalities but, AAA also note that many more road rage incidents simply go unreported.

A research team at Colorado State University lead by psychologist, William Szlemko performed a study focusing upon the increased number of vehicles on US roads. Larger numbers of vehicles and drivers means less space, and as is common with many other species, competition for space leads to territoriality and enhanced aggressiveness.

Hundreds of volunteer drivers were questioned, both about their driving habits and the vehicles they drove, including the degree to which they had “customized” or “personalized” their ride. Personalization included using furry dice hanging from the rear-view mirror and other dashboard and interior decoration together with placing bumper stickers, custom paint work and even what kind of stereo they had fitted.

The findings were clear: 16% of those who engaged in personalization of their ride were more prone to commit acts of road rage.

The researchers found that customization markers, such as bumper stickers were actually signs of territorial possession. The greater the degree of personalization, the more territorial the driver and therefore, the greater the likelihood they would engage in aggressive and violent behavior.

It does not matter that the vehicle is itself moving, it is the relative encroachment or interference with driving activity, which acts as the cue for increasingly aggressive territorial behavorial responses from drivers. Drivers are animals too, and they will actively protect space or a possession they have become attached too – those who use, for instance a bumper sticker, demonstrate a closer, personal link to their vehicle and are more prone to respond accordingly.

Szlemko observes there is an apparent disconnect between drivers who are in what they consider a “private space”, but are in fact within the “public” arena. He further states that drivers are displaying aggressive behavior because they forget they are not in a private setting, but on public highways. Perceived infractions don’t simply include driving too close or making intersecting maneuvers but also include, driving too fast, driving too slow, failing to use turn signals and simply looking at the other driver or their passengers.

With the correlation between bumper stickers and road rage so effectively demonstrated, the next time you feel the urge to tail gate in order to be able to read the “Peace” sticker on the back of the car in front, maybe you will be wise to check whether there is a gun rack in the back!

Dinner parties are great social celebrations and one can never be the same as another. People hold parties for different reasons. Whether for a simple get-together, an elaborate wedding reception, a house warming, or a personal celebration – people enjoy holding and attending parties. However, the same dinner party etiquette and reminders will apply. Just because a close relative is hosting the party doesn’t mean that you should leave your manners at the door. Reminders and guidelines for dinner parties are in place so that everyone will be able to enjoy the party and as well as everyone’s company. Here are some basic dinner party dos and don’ts that everyone should be aware of.

When the guests arrive, wait until everyone is seated before the food is served. The dinner party is meant to have the guests eat together and not separately. Additionally, with everyone seated, it will also make it less confusing for the servers. Thus, it is also practical to hold off serving food until everyone has arrived.

Having good conversations while eating is one of the best parts of having dinner parties. Keep the conversations light though for everyone, especially if it is the first time you will be meeting them. Avoid talking about politics, religion, or any other sensitive topics. While waiting for food to be served, people can talk to one another and get caught up with old friends or get to know new people. Since everyone is served at the same time, people will mostly finish eating at the same time. Try not to eat too slowly though so that everybody else can proceed with the other activities that are planned for the evening. In fact, try to pace yourself so that you finish eating at about the same time as your guests.

As the party host, try not to eat so much that you will be distracted from talking to and entertaining your guests. Generally, at dinner parties, the host plays an active role in socializing with people and facilitating conversation. So sometimes that may require eating a lighter meal.

Wine that is given by the guests is considered a gift to the hostess. Thus, it is up to you if the wines will be served that evening. Note the number of wine bottles that you have so if you will be serving them, everyone will get their share and note the quality of the wine as well. If the wine is an expensive upscale brand, then it is usually okay to save it for a special occasion. If a guest is particularly enthusiastic about the wine that they brought to your party, then you may want to consider serving it for the guests to enjoy.

With these reminders on hand, you can be sure that the guests and the host will be satisfied with the party. No matter what the purpose for the party is, what is important is everyone gets to have fun. Dinner party etiquette will never go out of style. Even as times change, it is important that everyone abides by the rules of dining etiquette so no one will feel out of place or disrespected in a celebration that’s meant everyone to be fun for everyone.

Do you hate dressing up? Does the thought of being confined in a fresh, crisp dress shirt and well-ironed pants immediately make you feel nauseated? For some people dressing up for their day-to-day activities can be as easy as 1-2-3, but when it comes to dressing for an occasion, particularly a formal one, it can be daunting. Well my friend, no matter how hard you try to avoid and resist this kind of situation, you really cannot hide from it. You have to face the awful truth that such a time could come and it will ask for you to, well, look your formal best. Need some advice? Here’s a guide that should hopefully make you more comfortable when such a need arises.

First of all, before dressing up, be sure to take a bath. Trim your nails, brush your teeth and shave, if necessary. Second, be sure to smell good. Put on some deodorant and fragrance, but keep it subtle. Third, mind your clothes. Be sure that they are laundered and well pressed. Check if there are repairs that need to be done before wearing them. Fourth, make sure your shoes are clean and polished. Nothing beats a man with shoes that shine! And lastly, be sure to comb your hair properly. Only very few men, and don’t be quick to assume that you are one of them, can get away with a dreamboat hairstyle – and even that needs some kind of preparation, contrary to what many people actually think. For a formal event, don’t let any hair be out of place and please, no rock star look!

So now, let’s try to choose some clothes. Formal gatherings usually call for dress codes. If it calls for Black Tie, men should wear black tuxedo with a white shirt, black bow tie, black waistcoat, black patent shoes, and black socks. When it says White Tie, a black tailcoat with matching black pants, white wing collar shirt, white pique vest, white bow tie, white gloves, black shoes, and black socks are the important items on your ensemble.

An item that adds to the elegance when dressing up formally could be a simple men’s jewelry called a cufflink. For most men, this item is only encountered when wearing a tux or when somebody gives it to them. It may be a small accessory but it has a big impact on the look of a suit or dress shirt. Nowadays, personalized cufflinks are in demand. Not only are they unique, but it’s one way of showing a person’s identity. This is why engraved cufflinks are becoming popular in the market. A cufflink is engraved when a design is incised on its flat surface by means of cutting grooves into it. The result is a decorated object itself.

There are many kinds of engraved cufflinks. From initials to symbols to favorite characters, all of them can represent something that truly belongs to whoever wears these kinds of cufflinks. Even those who decide to give cufflinks as their special gifts usually have them engraved with a meaningful character that reflects a part about the recipient. As they say, great items can come in small packages, and engraved cufflinks surely belong in this category.

Whether your interests are in silver, gold, artistic, sports, or other theme-related cufflinks we’ve got you covered. Cufflink Aficionado carries a broad range of men’s engraved cufflinks designed to meet each connoisseur’s individual style and interest.

Who says fashion is only for women? Men nowadays definitely are not spared from this culture that has been made popular with, in the beginning, women in mind. It is now common for men to ask questions like how to go about matching their socks with their trousers, how to choose the right shirt colors, how to accessorize for a formal party, and the likes.

Shoes and belts are things that men find very important on their get up. Remember to always match your belt with your shoes. This keeps things simple and on the right track. Opting for the traditional colors such as dark brown, black, or a rich tan is best when buying these items. Colors that are not on this line may prove hard to match, and should be avoided. If you wear suspenders, don’t bother for a belt; just wear one of them at a time. This is an “either or” situation. If you find yourself needing to wear sneakers everyday, a belt made of fabric or something equally casual usually goes well with jeans. Never have dress belts paired with your jeans or sneakers. That is not a good look no matter who you are.

Ties and shirts are also items that should be matched. Solid-colored shirts with a tie of the same color were the trend for sometime. Today, it can be considered a somewhat dated look. Ties are a great way to express your self, so why not experiment with the colors and designs? You can never go wrong with plaids and subtle patterns, diagonal stripes, and modern polka-dots, but keeping it tasteful is your best bet. Bear in mind that your tie should compliment your shirt or suit; novelty ties are short-lived, so try not to invest to heavily in them.

Trousers and socks should definitely match when worn together. For trousers, you can either go for the flat-front type or the pleated variety. Many find flat-front trousers better than pleats. Though pleats can make you look less slim, flat-fronts have a better tendency to fit you. If you want more room when wearing flat-fronts, buy a pair that is a little bigger and have it brought in at the waist. This can be done in fine retailers or with independent tailors. Your socks, regardless of what kind of trouser you are wearing, should be complementary in color. They need not be in the exact same shade, though, unless you are wearing black (always match your blacks!).

Watches and other jewelry are important accessories for men. Invest in a good watch that suits your lifestyle and taste. For your jewelry, it is best to stick to the basics, like something with gold or silver. They can easily be matched with your whole wardrobe. If you can afford to purchase several of these items (even in today’s economy) try to mix things up. Keep different styles ready and be sure to wear the pieces appropriate to what you are wearing and to how formal the event you are going to is. For jewelry, try out mens cufflinks. They can add elegance and sophistication to your final look. These items are available in basic designs and in different styles. Mens Cufflinks are good investments as they rarely ever go out of style.

Who says dressing up in black can be boring, a drab, or even unsophisticated? There are a lot of great things that black clothing can do when you wear them properly. For instance, black can certainly flatter your figure and your look. Some people actually look slimmer in black while others look absolutely elegant in it. Black clothing can also be worn anytime of the day; that’s unique in the realms of color. With a nice pair of shoes, some good and colorful accessories and the right attitude, your basic black can quickly become not so basic at all. Let’s check out some of the ways to dress up in black.

For work, simple black clothing can easily be made into a more professional look by, for example, opting to wear a colorful shirt in shades such as yellow, green, red, or blues in a basic black suit. For ladies, a tote in fun shapes and sizes can easily achieve functionality and professionalism. Also try on fabulous shoes in metallic tones and wear bold jewelry such as rings, bold bangles or dangly earrings and your sure to spice up your ensemble! For men, try wearing colorful ties and uniquely printed ones for a sure fire hit wardrobe.

During daytime, a button down shirt paired with Capri style pants can be a good choice for women. Wear accessories in odd shapes and sophisticated colors for a more interesting look. A red coat can give added punch to your outfit. At night time, your little black dress can look glamorous with the right kind of pearls and dressy shoes that anyone would die for. Create a more dramatic look by putting on darker lipstick and shades that will bring out the beauty in your eyes.

When going formal, a long black gown can turn heads with the right hair style and jewelry. Keep them as simple as you can. For a more glamorous effect, you can put on a faux fur stole. For men, a black tux has that irresistible appeal especially on women. It gives a certain aura of mystery that most men would like to keep. The shoes play very important roles in dressing up. If in black, go for special ones with character. Women have Manolo Blahnik, Kate Spade or Guess as perfect examples of these. For men, Prada and Gucci are just perfect for their sophisticated look. For those with tight budgets, watch out for sales in designer stores. This way, you can look incredible without going broke.

Finally choose the right kind of jewelry. Try different pieces especially when in black. Pearls or necklaces with semi-precious stones best fit women. Men also have their own necklaces and bracelets, and the cufflinks. Cufflinks, especially engraved cufflinks, add a more elegant and classy look on men in black. Having engraved cufflinks certainly give a statement on the personality of the one wearing them. It’s the best choice if one prefers individuality and personalization. These items might be small, but they certainly give a huge impact when dressing up. So, who says black is boring?

Being a doctor is one of those jobs that goes beyond turning up, marking time and cashing your pay check at the end of the month. It requires absolute commitment and can be a truly exhausting job, and not all the endings are happy. However, it is still a job which attracts many people, and can be genuinely rewarding.

People do this job because it needs to be done and, if you are a good doctor, you can save lives, give people their quality of life back and help countless people turn themselves around. For fulfillment, there are few better jobs – just as long as you don’t get unrealistic expectations about saving everyone and curing everything, and realise you do plenty as it is.

One would think that, given the important work a doctor does, that what is on the surface would not matter so much. Why does your external appearance come into the question when it’s your medical abilities that will really matter? Does it really make a difference what you wear so long as the patients are treated in the correct way?

The reason is that a patient needs to have confidence in their doctor. Simply put, if you enter a medical consulting room looking like you wash your scrub tops with dish water, patients will not be confident. In fact, psychologically there can be a serious negative effect from seeing a doctor who appears grubby or dirty in a hospital where reason dictates that everything should be clean.

Hygiene is of vital importance in a hospital. It is a chilling fact that people still to this day can die after sustaining relatively minor injuries as a result of bugs they have picked up in the hospital – it is rare, but still possible. A great many doctors will go through their entire careers without actually seeing it happen or knowing anyone who has – but this does not comfort some patients

The last thing that any doctor wants is for his or her patients to fear that an infection may come from the person giving care, so it is essential to present yourself in a clean and tidy fashion, and this entails wearing a clean and tidy scrub top. If you take pride in your appearance the patients are more likely to feel that they are getting the best treatment they can hope for.

Your scrub pants are also important, and need to be well fitted as well as clean. Of course what matters most is how you care for your patients and how you treat them, but they will be more responsive to a doctor who gives them confidence.

Make sure when you buy your scrubs pant that you get a pair which fit you well and are easy to keep clean – you’re doing an important job out there. Why undersell yourself when the job you are doing could not be done by just anyone? Take care of how you look, and let your natural and learned abilities shine through.

The art of fine entertaining is not lost. Although most of us rarely host elegant parties, every once in while, it can be a lot of fun to gather around the table with friends for a proper dinner party. Of course, it is not just the efforts of the hosts that make a dinner party a success; the guests have a role to play as well. Brush up on your dinner guest manners with these helpful tips.

R.s.v.p. promptly. Yes, we all lead busy lives, but it is patently unfair to leave your host hanging about whether or not you plan to attend their dinner party. Oftentimes, the hosts are aiming for a certain number of guests around the table, so if you decline, they may well wish to invite another guest to take your spot. Once you have accepted an invitation, you are obligated to keep the date, unless you become very ill or get invited to the White House. “Something better came along” does not qualify as a reason to back out of an invitation to dinner!

Show up on time. By “on time”, I mean not late, but not early either. The host of a party works hard to create a special ambiance, while making it all appear effortless. The guest who arrives twenty minutes early will find the candles unlit, the host walking around with wet hair from his shower, and the hostess frantically searching for those cute little earrings she picked up at her favorite jewelry store in Raleigh. Your hosts will be less than thrilled to have a guest to attend to while they are running around putting the finishing touches on their party.

Of course, being late is just as bad. It is one thing to arrive “fashionably late” to a cocktail party or an open house, but if dinner is being served, it is rude to be late and keep everyone waiting. The roast will be overcooked, the hostess anxious (“How much longer should we wait before we serve dinner?”), and the rest of the guests will be irritated with you. If you realize that you will be more than ten to fifteen minutes late, call your host, apologize profusely for being tardy, and insist that they start dinner without you. When you do arrive, slip into dinner as unobtrusively as possible.

Offer a small gift. A bottle of wine or a box of fine chocolates can properly be brought to the dinner party, but if you plan to give flowers, it is most polite to have them delivered to the house in advance of the party. That way your host does not have to drop everything to search for a vase when you arrive at the door. It is also fine to think more creatively about a hostess gift. A beautiful hardcover book, a small gift from the jewelry store in Raleigh your hostess likes, or a gift for the kitchen like a handcrafted wooden cutting board all make great dinner party presents. Don’t feel like you have to spend a lot of cash either, just pick a charming little trinket that will make your hosts smile.

Be a good conversationalist. The flow of conversation around the dinner table will make or break a dinner party. Do your best to be engaging, to speak to the guests on either side of you, and to avoid controversial topics like religion and politics. Don’t be surprised if you are not seated beside your spouse; it is customary to break up married couples to encourage all the guests to chat with each other. If you have no idea what to talk about, read the newspaper the morning of the party to brush up on current events.

Finally, send a thank you note! Let your hosts know how much you enjoyed their party by sending a brief thank you note the next day. And last but not least, plan to reciprocate with an invitation of your own sometime in the near future.

People who have lent their time, wisdom, or financial help to us deserve to be thanked and appreciate. Whether they are parents or relatives, friends, colleagues, or a total stranger who have come when we called up, thanking them is such a good gesture and what else would be more gracious if it is in the form of gifts?

It is through giving thank you gifts that you can actually respond to counter those generosity and support that people have provided you. Though gifts, you can show to them that what they offered to you has been truly appreciated, and that their good deeds are something that not everyone can do promptly. Thanking the people who have helped during your down time or when you are in trouble can really become heartfelt especially when you are using gifts as your medium. The gifts would be the physical or tangible expression of your sincere gratitude to those people. It is somehow a little pay back for at least a tad portion of generosity that was shown to you.

In the corporate world, giving thank you gifts can become a good start of a strategy to gain loyalty and trust from clients. Both small and big business companies give thank you gifts to their clients for continuous patronization and trust that they showed to the firm. And this being said, clients would likely help spreading the words to their friends and family members.

But before you buy anything for your recipient, you must first look deep within his/her personality or what makes her life happy. Consider your recipient’s passion, hobby, or interest. You may also think of a theme that suits who your recipient is or related to what type of business you have. You should aim for a gift that leaves a mark in the mind of the person you want to thank for.

Books are safe gifts that you can offer to your recipient. A book that has a preferred topic or author could be an excellent idea. The same thing that holds true when choosing a CD or DVD as a thank you gift, or maybe tickets to a concert, play or opera. It can help you choose the most specific one if you know a few about your recipient. Also make sure that it fits your budget.

Foods are another safe ideas to offer. Gourmet cheese, chocolates, crackers, and bottles of wine are a few delightful treats that could thank the people whom you owe a lot. A gift basket filled with gourmet foods is perfect for a group of staff that have joined forces to help you get through from a challenging task.

Take time when you are searching for thank you gifts. This also applies when looking for other business gifts or reward gifts for employees who have worked hard throughout the year. As much as possible, consider personalized gifts that you can be engraved with the name or initials of your recipient. Including a short line of phrase or message is a thoughtful option as well.

When one is invited to a wedding, it is only appropriate to give the couple a gift. However, gift giving is not just about choosing the cheapest item you can find. Unknown to some, there are unwritten rules or etiquette expected from the guests – from answering RSVPs, to choosing wedding gifts for the couple.

Engagement party

In general, the engagement party is the best time to ask about the couple’s plans for the wedding and other details such as their bridal registry. For couples who have made arrangements for bridal registries before the engagement party, the shower is the best time to bring your present as opposed to bringing them on the actual day of the wedding. If the couple has not made any arrangements, the shower is the best time for you and take the opportunity to explore your creativity. Other than decorative items for the couple’s home, other interesting choices could be membership to a fitness centre, a wine club, or cooking lessons from a culinary institute.

Bridal registries

It is common for couples to register in more than one store for their bridal registry. However, even if they have, it is not a guarantee that they will include that information in their wedding invitations as some still find bridal registries tacky or embarrassing. When you don’t see any registry information on the wedding invitation it is best to call and ask the couple directly. If that is a little awkward, you can call the couple’s family instead or their close friends.

Price

When invited to a wedding, one should remember that this is not the right time to look for the cheapest item you can find. In fact, this is the time that calls for a more generous present. As a general rule, you are not required to break the bank when choosing a wedding gift. However, it is always best to choose something that you can afford. If you are not sure about the amount, you can base the price range of the present on the type of celebration the couple is having. If the couple is having their reception in an exclusive venue with butlers and expensive catering, you might need to shell out a bit more than you normally would when buying presents for simpler ceremonies.

Cash gifts

Cash gifts are becoming increasingly popular these days as more and more couples are marrying at a later age and they most likely have their homes already set up. Other than that, it is more practical and convenient for both the couple and the person giving the present. The couple can use the money to purchase their home, pay up their mortgage and other bills, add to their savings, or to take care of other wedding expenses. If you decide to give a cash gift instead, it is only appropriate to write a check addressed either to the bride or the groom if sent out before the wedding or addressed to Mr. and Mrs. if sent out after the wedding.

Eating meals together should not just be seen as a daily routine, rather, it has significant importance between families and loved ones. In today’s modern and hectic time, people go to drive-thru’s, have lunch delivered at the office, or eat while in the car. Having meals together at the dining table is a somewhat rare and special event altogether.

If you and your family and loved ones are catching up only on weekends at the dinner table, why not make it extra special by setting up a formal dinner table. Formal dinner table settings are also appropriate when you have guests coming over or for other formal and special events.

Before setting the table, get out all the utensils that you will need and set them on the counter. Make sure to get enough for all your dinner guests and use plates, bowls, and silverware from the same set for uniformity. The items not to miss out on are:

Dinner plate with salad or soup bowl on it, knife, small spoon, soup spoon, bread plate with butter knife, coffee cup, water glass, wine glass, salad fork, dinner fork, and dessert fork.

Have a centerpiece that will reflect the mood that you want to have during dinner. Have a bouquet of flowers, candles, or a basket of fruit if you to have a formal and elegant dinner. Having a toy or any representative object (such as wrapped gifts) can make the dinner extra playful or look celebratory (especially if you will indeed have a celebration that night).

Dinner plates are placed approximately an inch away from the edge of the table. This is just the exact distance so people will not be stooping down or reaching out to their plates. Prints or patterns printed on your plate should be seen at the right side of the person.

The knife is placed on the right side of the plate with its blades inward. Ensure that the blade is just on the side, and not underneath the plate.

On the left of the dinner plate should be the fork, and when resting, fork prongs should face upwards. The tablespoon is placed next to the knife.

The napkin may simply be folded in half or you may use some fancy folding technique. As for placement, you can place them on top of the dinner plate, or beside the flatware (found on your left).

If extra fork or spoon is needed (for dessert, soups or salad), place the extra spoons next to the main spoons and the extra fork beside the main forks.

Always remember that silverware is used from the outside in – so the first ones that will be used should be at the farthest side of the dinner plate, while the last ones are the ones nearer the plate.

It is actually fun to set-up a dinner table especially when you know that your family will be enjoying it as well. No need to purchase new and expensive table pieces and china. All you need are the basics and a little creativity in making dinner and other meal times as special as your love for the family.
